Four hurt as speeding car jumps divider on Kolkata’s Maa flyover; minister seeks tough charges
The car crossed into oncoming traffic on Saturday morning. Minister Agnimitra Paul says it should be treated as attempted murder.
At least four people were injured early on Saturday when a speeding car jumped the divider on Kolkata's Maa flyover and crashed head-on into a car coming the other way, according to TV9 Bangla and Sangbad Pratidin.
Police sources told TV9 Bangla that the car was heading from the Park Circus Seven Point side towards the EM Bypass when it crossed into the opposite lane and hit a car travelling towards Park Circus. The right side of the second car was crushed and a wheel came off the first. Witnesses said the car had been driven recklessly fast, the reports said.
The injured, including a driver, were taken to SSKM Hospital and a private hospital, Sangbad Pratidin reported. TV9 Bangla said a child was among those hurt. No deaths were reported. Traffic on the flyover was held up for some time before being restored.
Police took both cars to a police station and have begun an investigation, including checking CCTV footage. No arrest had been reported by Saturday evening.
State Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul, speaking to reporters in Asansol, said the crash should be treated as a case of attempted murder and demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible, Sangbad Pratidin reported. She said reckless driving copied from Hindi films would not be tolerated.
