Coal India's October output rises 19% to 67.2 million tonnes

The Kolkata-based miner's offtake rose 18.7%, and Eastern Coalfields grew 27.9%, but production for the year so far is up just 0.7%.

Coal India, the Kolkata-headquartered state miner, said on Sunday that it produced 67.2 million tonnes of coal in October, up 19.3% from 56.4 million tonnes a year earlier, according to provisional figures it filed with the stock exchanges, PTI reported.

Offtake, the coal dispatched to power plants and other customers, rose 18.7% to 70.3 million tonnes.

Six of its seven main subsidiaries raised output. Mahanadi Coalfields in Odisha was the largest producer at 20.8 million tonnes, up 25.3%, and Western Coalfields grew fastest, by 64.7% to 5.9 million tonnes. Eastern Coalfields, whose mines are in Bengal's Raniganj belt and in Jharkhand, produced 4.6 million tonnes, up 27.9%, and its offtake rose 35.1% to 4.9 million tonnes. Northern Coalfields was the only major subsidiary to report lower output, down 4.3% to 11.4 million tonnes.

The strong October has barely moved the year so far. Production for April to October was 388.2 million tonnes, only 0.7% higher than a year earlier, while offtake for the period rose 9.2% to 454.6 million tonnes.

The figures are provisional and may be revised in the company's later filings.
